Day 1

AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK

AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK

Akagera National Park in Rwanda, spanning 1,100 sq km, showcases diverse landscapes from savannahs to wetlands. Established in 1934, it's home to the Big Five and a variety of wildlife like giraffes, zebras, and numerous bird species. Visitors enjoy guided game drives, boat safaris, and walking tours. The park symbolizes Rwanda's commitment to conservation and responsible tourism, engaging local communities while preserving its rich biodiversity.

Guests will have the opportunity to view a range of wildlife on expertly-guided game drives, and boating trips Wilderness Magashi has been established in partnership with the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) and African Parks, demonstrating our commitment to pioneering sustainable and authentic ecotourism in Rwanda.

Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, spanning 160 sq km, showcases the majestic Virunga Mountains and is famed for its rare mountain gorillas. Trekking these lush landscapes offers intimate encounters with these gentle giants. Beyond gorillas, diverse wildlife and unique flora thrive, supporting eco-tourism and local communities. The park stands as a beacon of Rwanda's conservation commitment and offers a unique blend of adventure, biodiversity, and cultural immersion.

After breakfast depart Wilderness Magashi Lodge and begin your 4 to 5 hour drive through Rwanda countryside to Volcanoes National Park, and on to Bisate Lodge.

Hike through verdant rainforest to visit Karisoke’s haunting ruins and Fossey’s grave, next to her beloved gorilla, Digit. Here, gorillas, now numbering more than 1 000 throughout the Virunga massif, await you. For one precious hour, your allocated family may deliver your life’s most astonishing encounter. Gorilla trekking is the star attraction, but nearby Volcanoes National Park offers other adventures: golden monkey trekking; the Fossey hike; scaling Mount Bisoke. On lodge property, explore nature trails where birds proliferate and a camera trap recently recorded a first: a silverback gorilla lumbering along the path.
